THE University OF MAINE SCHOOL OF LAW

Portland, Maine is a vibrant city surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Located just two hours from metropolitan Boston, our students take advantage of a variety of cultural amenities both in and around Portland.

Maine Law prepares its graduates for a wide variety of careers in law, business, government, and public service. Areas of special curricular strength include business and commercial law, marine law, trial advocacy, and international law. We offers a rich array of co-curricular activities—scholarly journals, trial and moot court competitions, student organizations, and public interest causes. We hope to provide you with the practical information you’re looking for, while also giving you a sense of our values and the unique personality of Maine Law. Our Law School is one of the smallest in the country. We take pride in providing the personal attention that few schools can match, a focus on hands-on learning, and a world-class faculty drawn to our incredible setting on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

Courses

LL.M.
We offers an LL.M. program designed for both U.S. and foreign students and practitioners who have earned a law degree or equivalent qualifications to practice law in their home countries. Through a rigorous program of study, LL.M. candidates learn about many aspects of the U.S. legal system as well as international law.

J.D. Programs
The Maine School of Law’s three-year J.D. curriculum is designed to give students a solid foundation in legal analysis and practical lawyering skills that will serve them well in any pursuit. Maine Law offers a wide variety of courses, as well as opportunities for fellowships, internships and externships for academic credit. Small class sizes foster a collaborative environment, and encourage interaction between professors and students.
Clinical Programs

At the University of Maine School of Law, students have many opportunities to learn through hands-on experience working with real clients, cases, and problems. Each of the clinic and externship programs provides students intensive instruction and mentoring by supervisors who are both experienced practitioners and dedicated teachers. The Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic, established in 1969, is one of the nation’s oldest continuously-operating law school clinical programs and a highly-respected provider of legal services. Maine Law offers separate clinical courses through CLAC: General Practice Clinic, Juvenile Justice Clinic, Prisoner Assistance Clinic, and Refugee and Human Rights Clinic.

Dual and Joint Degree Programs
We offer joint degree options to students in conjunction with the business schools of the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine.
Maine Law offers two dual degree options with the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine: Juris Doctor and Master of Public Health (J.D./M.P.H.) and Juris Doctor and Master of Policy, Planning and Management (J.D/M.P.P.M).
