Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world and is situated on the banks of the holy river Ganga and the City – known for spirituality, where life is obsessed with unending search for truth and knowledge. It could be the City’s inherent zest for education and learning that prompted the great visionary Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya to choose this holy land for establishing his dream institution – Banaras Hindu University, in the year 1916. The Law School is one of the earliest Faculties established in the Banaras Hindu University, when teaching started in 1921-22 academic session in two rooms borrowed from the Faculty of Arts.
Bachelor of Law LL.B. (Hons.)
For the purpose of LL.B. (Hons.) (Three Year/ Six Semester) Course admission, the Banaras Hindu University conducts Undergraduate Entrance Test (UET), during 3rd /4th week of May every year. Admissions are made according to merit in the UET, subject to fulfilling of eligibility requirements mentioned below and availability of seats.
ELIGIBILITY: B.A./ B.Sc./ B.Com./Shastri (at least 10+2+3 pattern) securing a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate considering all the subjects in the three years except those subjects where only pass marks are required and which do not contribute to the total in the final (degree) mark sheet. OR any other Degree under at least 10+2+3 pattern recognized by the Bar Council of India for the purpose of admission to LL.B. Course securing a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate considering all the subjects in the three years (aggregate being calculated as mentioned above).
Master of Law (LL.M.)
For the purpose of admissions in three different kinds of LL.M. courses, Banaras Hindu University conducts one Postgraduate Entrance Test (PET) during May / June every year. Admissions are made according to merit of the PET subject to the choice given by candidates, and fulfilling the eligibility requirements and availability of seats in respective courses.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicant who has successfully completed 3-Year LL.B. / is appearing in Sixth Semester of 3-Year LL.B. after Graduation under at least 10+2+3 pattern or successfully completed 5 year LL.B. / is appearing in Tenth Semester of 5 year LL.B. under 10+2+5 pattern recognised by the Bar Council of India securing a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate in LL.B. Degree.
Doctorate in Law
Ph.D (Full Time)
Banaras Hindu University conducts Common Research Entrance Tests (CRET) during March / July every year. Admissions are made according to merit of the CRET, and fulfilling the eligibility requirements and availability of seats in the Faculty. Candidates qualified NET / JRF are exempted from CRET.
Post Graduate Diploma Courses (Part-Time)
ELIGIBILITY: For all diploma courses running in the Faculty an applicant shall have Graduate Degree in any discipline from a recognized Indian University or equivalent degree from a Foreign University. Candidates must have secured a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate.
There are separate hostel facilities for male and female students of law. The Law School has three separate hostels for the male students – Dr. Bhagwan Das Hostel with the intake capacity of 239 students and is allotted for LL.B. students; Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Hostel with the intake capacity of 67 students is allotted for LL.M. and Ph.D. students and New Law Hostel for LL.B. (Final Year) and LL.M. (First Year) Students. Female students are accommodated in the various hostels of the University including in the Trivani Hostel Complex.
The Law School has a library rich in books and journals. It possesses more than eighty thousand (80000) books including more than 135 national and International Research Journals. Latest issues of the journals are regularly displayed on the display rack kept in the Reading Hall of the Library.
